Mikel Obi hosts Carlo Ancelotti on his podcast, veteran coach reveals how Mbappe will fit into Madrid attack

Former Super Eagles of Nigeria skipper Mikel Obi played host to Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti on his ObiOne podcast. SportsRation reports.

Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has shared insights into how new signing Kylian Mbappe will be integrated into his squad, following the French star’s move from Paris Saint-Germain.

Ancelotti discussed Mbappe’s role with former Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel, addressing concerns about fitting the star into an already talented attacking lineup. Mbappe, known for his preference to play on the left wing or as a second striker, faces competition for that position at Real Madrid from Vinicius Junior, who has established himself in that role, and Rodrygo, who is also a natural winger.

Despite these challenges, Ancelotti expressed confidence in finding the right spot for Mbappe. “I see him playing in front. And the front, the attack is quite wide. The pitch is 68 metres. You have to cover the 68 metres with the players in front,” Ancelotti explained on the Obi One podcast.

The veteran Italian manager emphasised flexibility and movement within the squad. He pointed out how previous players adapted their positions throughout the season, using examples from last year’s team. “If I ask you where Vinicius played last season, it’s difficult to say, he didn’t play like a winger. The important key to having a good attack is good attacking players, the mobility of the players. Sometimes they can play on the left, sometimes they can play in the middle,” Ancelotti said.

Ancelotti also noted the versatile roles of other players, such as Jude Bellingham and Rodrygo, who frequently shifted positions during games. “Bellingham sometimes played on the left, sometimes played in the middle, sometimes went to the right. Rodrygo started most of the games on the right, but sometimes during the game, played on the left. It is important for the mobility and creativity of players when they have the ball,” he added.

Mbappe, now the top earner at Real Madrid following his high-profile transfer, is expected to be a key figure in Ancelotti’s plans.
