Mikel Obi names one Premier League record Pep Guardiola will love to break

Super Eagles legend John Mikel Obi believes that Arsenal’s remarkable “Invincibles” record may never be broken, even by a manager as successful as Pep Guardiola.

Arsenal made history 20 years ago when they completed the 2003-04 Premier League season undefeated, an achievement that remains one of the most impressive records in English football. Despite Manchester City’s dominance under Guardiola, no team has managed to replicate Arsenal’s feat.

On a recent episode of his podcast, Mikel Obi reflected on the Invincibles’ legacy, saying, “The Invincibles, I don’t know when that record is going to ever be broken.” When asked if he thought any team could match Arsenal’s unbeaten run, the former Chelsea and Middlesbrough midfielder expressed doubt, particularly in the highly competitive Premier League.

“I think that is one record Pep Guardiola would really love to break—the unbeaten record,” Mikel added.

Guardiola’s Manchester City has come close, particularly during the 2017-18 season when they set a record for the most points in a single Premier League season with 100 and became the first team in England to win a domestic treble with 98 points. They also achieved the unprecedented feat of winning four consecutive Premier League titles.

However, even with all their success, City has yet to match Arsenal’s unbeaten run. Their closest attempt came in the 2017-18 season when they went 21 games unbeaten before losing to Liverpool in January 2018.

Reflecting on Arsenal’s 2003-04 season, Mikel highlighted the unique challenge of matching that level of consistency. Arsene Wenger’s squad won 26 and drew 12 of their 38 league games, a testament to their quality, mental strength, and consistency.

As the Premier League becomes increasingly competitive, many, including Mikel Obi, believe that Arsenal’s Invincibles record may stand the test of time, remaining an elusive milestone for future teams and managers.
