Mikel Obi offers advice to Enzo Fernandez amidst racism controversy

Former Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has shared his thoughts on the recent controversy involving Enzo Fernandez, offering advice to the Argentine amid the backlash he faces following derogatory remarks.

Fernandez, who played a key role in Argentina’s Copa America triumph, has found himself at the center of a storm after racist comments surfaced from a celebration video.

Enzo Fernandez, signed by Chelsea from Benfica for a record £106.8 million in January 2023, has come under scrutiny after a video emerged showing him and his teammates making racially insensitive remarks about French players of African descent. The comments, made during Copa America celebrations, have caused significant uproar, leading to a rift within the Chelsea squad. Several players, including those targeted by the remarks, have unfollowed Fernandez on social media, further fueling the controversy.

In response to the backlash, Fernandez issued a public apology, acknowledging the inappropriateness of his actions. Despite this, the incident has caused considerable damage, prompting widespread criticism and calls for further accountability.

John Obi Mikel, known for his measured approach both on and off the pitch, addressed the situation on his “Obi One” podcast. Mikel, a former Chelsea star, condemned Fernandez’s behavior, emphasising the need for understanding and respect for the diverse backgrounds of teammates.

“It’s a type of behavior I won’t condone. These players have different stories; you can’t make fun of them until you understand that,” Mikel stated. “None of them chose to be in this situation, and I get that you want to make fun of them, but it is not right.”

Mikel offered practical advice for Fernandez on how to repair his reputation and mend fractured relationships within the team. He suggested that Fernandez should focus on his performances on the pitch as a way to atone for his actions.

“The only way he can settle this is by ensuring the team starts winning,” Mikel explained. “If you start winning, it changes everything because of the celebration and the hugs. If Enzo comes back, first game and scores a goal, you will see those players going to hug him. They have to go and hug him; they have to go and celebrate with him. Slowly and surely, that brings the team together.”
