Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has praised Kevin De Bruyne following the Belgian midfielder’s announcement that he will leave Manchester City at the end of the season.
De Bruyne, 33, confirmed last week that he will leave City after ten successful years at the club. His decision has surprised many football fans around the world.
The Belgian star has been a key part of Manchester City’s most successful era, scoring 106 goals and providing 176 assists in 414 matches. However, he has struggled with injuries and form over the past two seasons, which played a role in his decision to move on.
Mikel, who once played alongside De Bruyne at Chelsea, spoke highly of him on his Obi One Podcast.
“De Bruyne made the Premier League better” – Mikel Obi
“Kevin has made the Premier League a much better league to watch,” Mikel said. “He’s full of talent – his vision, awareness, and the way he plays the game is amazing.”
Mikel recalled how De Bruyne joined a strong Manchester City team that already had stars like Yaya Toure and Fernandinho, yet still made an immediate impact.
“He came in and started performing straight away. Match after match, he was creating assists and scoring goals. He’s been fantastic for over a decade and has played a big part in City’s success,” Mikel said.
A Premier League Legend
Mikel described De Bruyne as one of the most important players in Manchester City’s history.
“He’s probably the only player you can say City would really struggle without,” Mikel added. “I’m not a City fan, but it’s sad to see such a great player leave the Premier League.”
“He’s a joy to watch – his passing, his control – all fantastic. I believe he’s now among the best three midfielders in Premier League history, alongside legends like Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard, and Steven Gerrard.”
“In fact, I think Kevin is ahead of one or two of them. What he has achieved at City is amazing. He won the Premier League four times in a row – I don’t think we’ll see that again anytime soon.”
What’s Next for De Bruyne?
Although De Bruyne’s current contract ends this season, he might stay a few more weeks to play in the Club World Cup. He’s been linked with a move to MLS in the United States or a club in Saudi Arabia, but his next destination is yet to be confirmed.
