Mikel Obi reveals why he is impressed with the recent Super Eagles’ performance

Mikel Obi has lauded the Super Eagles for their impressive performances in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, despite the managerial turbulence that has surrounded the team.

The Super Eagles secured four points from two matches against Benin Republic and Rwanda, keeping their hopes alive for qualification.

Mikel, a former Chelsea star and Super Eagles captain, acknowledged the team’s efforts in handling the pressure. “There is no denying we did so well in the last African Cup of Nations, and we want to qualify again,” Mikel said, reflecting on the team’s ambitions following their strong display in the tournament earlier this year.

Focusing on the 2-0 home victory against Benin Republic, Mikel praised the Super Eagles’ attitude and approach. “I thought the team played really well in the first game, won it comfortably,” he remarked. He highlighted the players’ “great attitude, motivation, and finding a way to beat a very stubborn Benin team,” praising their resilience and determination.

The former midfielder also emphasized the importance of securing home victories, especially against teams like Benin. “That’s what we have to do when you play at home—you’re expected to beat the likes of Benin,” Mikel stated, while also showing respect for the opposition. His comments reflect the high standards the Super Eagles are held to by their fans and followers.

Despite the success, Mikel acknowledged the challenges the team has faced, particularly due to the uncertainty surrounding the coaching staff. “I would like to commend the players for putting in such a professional display, hard work,” Mikel said, noting that their performance came under difficult circumstances.

The Super Eagles have been operating under interim coach Augustine Eguavoen, with no permanent head coach in place. Mikel highlighted the difficulties this situation poses for the players: “Every time you come in, there is a new manager—we don’t have a coach. It is difficult to come in knowing that you don’t have a coach, how do you deal with that?”

Mikel’s assessment of the team’s professionalism and resilience provides valuable insight into how the players have navigated these challenges. His remarks suggest that, despite the ongoing uncertainty, the Super Eagles have maintained a positive environment, pushing forward towards AFCON 2025 qualification.
