Mikel Obi Shares Emotional Tribute to Keshi and Eguavoen
Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has opened up about the two coaches who had the biggest impact on his football career with the Nigerian national team.
Speaking on his podcast, Mikel spoke warmly about the late Stephen Keshi and Augustine Eguavoen. He explained how both men shaped him, not just as a player but also as a person.
Mikel, who played over a hundred times for Nigeria, said Keshi and Eguavoen stood out because of their leadership and personal support. “They were more than coaches,” he said. “They were like fathers to me.”
Keshi Was a True Leader
Mikel described Keshi as the coach who brought success and belief back to the Super Eagles. Under Keshi’s guidance, Nigeria won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2013, with Mikel playing a key role in the team.
“Keshi believed in me from the start,” Mikel said. “He trusted me to lead the team on the pitch, and that gave me confidence. Winning AFCON with him is one of my proudest moments.”
Keshi, who sadly passed away in 2016, is remembered by many Nigerians as a legend, both as a player and a coach.
Eguavoen’s Support from the Beginning
Mikel Obi also shared his deep respect for Augustine Eguavoen, who coached him at different stages of his career, starting from the U17 team. He said Eguavoen always treated him like a son.
“Eguavoen was there at the beginning of my journey,” Mikel said. “He made me feel important and gave me my first chance. Even later with the Super Eagles, he was always supportive and encouraging.”
A Message for the New Generation
During his conversation with Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen, Mikel Obi praised the current squad and encouraged them to respect the people who help them grow. He reminded young players that behind every great footballer, there are coaches who guide and believe in them.
“Keshi and Eguavoen made me the player I became,” Mikel said. “I hope today’s players also have people like them in their lives.”
