Mikel quits Japanese club Shonan Bellamare
Seven-cap Super Eagles of Nigeria Midfielder Mikel Agu has quit Japanese J1 club Shonan Bellamare after a single season ridden by Injury.
Shonan Bellamare through its official communication channels, announced the departure of the Nigerian international.
Mikel Agu joined Shonan Bellmare last summer, penning a two-year deal with the Japanese club but that will end prematurely with the consent of both parties.
The Midfielders season was ridden by injuries, restricting him to just one appearance to his name in a Emperor’s Cup match versus BTOP Hokkaido on June 7.
Despite not getting to play as many games for the club, Mikel still had reasons to say goodbye to Shonan Bellamare supporters.
Mikel said: “I would like to express my deep gratitude to all the Shonan supporters.
“Even though I didn’t have many opportunities to play in matches, I felt the deep affection of the supporters from the bottom of my heart. I am very grateful for that.
“Ever since I became a professional soccer player, I have never felt so much love from the supporters.”
30-year old Mikel Agu has spent most of his career in Portugal and holds seven International caps with Nigeria. He made his Super Eagles debut Vs Togo in an International Friendly game on June 1st, 2017.
His name Mikel and defensive midfield role draws similarity with retired compatriot and ex-chelsea star John Mikel Obi.
