Moffi continues hot streak, nets in Lorient away win

Super Eagles striker now on six Ligue 1 goals in 2022-23

Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi continued his fine form for FC Lorient as they defeated AJ Auxerre 3-1 in their French Ligue 1 clash. The 23-year-old found the back of the net once for his side in the match as they moved level on points with log leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

Having struggled for form for large parts of 2021-22, Moffi has shown a ruthlessness in his game this season for FC Lorient. The Super Eagles striker had scored five goals in the opening seven matches of the season for his side and looked to continue with his good form as his side travelled to take on Auxerre.

The visitors took the lead through 20-year-old Burkina Faso winger Dango Ouattara after only 15 minutes of the clash. It was the youngster’s fourth goal of the season for the side. Not to be left out, Moffi added his name to the scoresheet in the 36th minute.

A far post cross was headed back across goal by Tunisian defender Montassar Talbi and Moffi ghosted into the right spot to plant a firm header into the back of the net from close range. The striker has six goals in eight outings for his club this season, a vast improvement from his tally of eight goals in 37 appearances in 2021-22. With Victor Osimhen and Sadiq Umar sidelined, Jose Peseiro will turn to Moffi for cover in this month’s Super Eagles friendly.

Not done scoring yet, FC Lorient added a third three minutes to the break through midfielder Enzo Le Fee. The visitors were cruising through the match in style. Auxerre managed to pull one back through winger Gauthier Hein in the 50th minute but Lorient held on for the win.

Super Eagles midfielder Innocent Bonke was a second-half substitute for FC Lorient. He was introduced for Julien Ponceau after 72 minutes.

After their win, Lorient have risen to third in Ligue 1 on 19 points, level on points with leaders Paris Saint-Germain and second-place Olympique Marseille albeit with one more game played than both clubs. They have already taken more than 50% of their total points tally from 2021-22 in the opening eight matches of this season.
