Moffi opens Nice account with brace in Monaco thrashing
Super Eagles striker helps new side break duck against Monaco
Terem Moffi scored his first goals for OGC Nice in their impressive 3-0 win over AS Monaco away from home in Ligue 1. The Super Eagles striker also added an assist for the Eaglets as they ended a barren run against the principality club.
Since joining Nice from FC Lorient in the winter, Moffi had yet to open his goalscoring account with the club, with no goals in his first three games for the side. They were, however, up against a side that he had enjoyed a good goalscoring return against in the past.
Nice had lost four of their last five league meetings with Monaco, drawing the other one. They had also failed to beat Monaco at home in almost nine years, with their last win coming in 2014. Monaco were also on a four-game win streak in the league coming into the tie.
Moffi showed his deadly finishing on the counter after only eight minutes of the match to put Nice ahead. The 23-year-old timed his run perfectly to latch onto a long pass from captain Dante, taking advantage of Axel Disasi misjudging the flight of the ball. The striker showed great composure to slide his effort under the onrushing goalkeeper.
The Super Eagles striker showed his fast break quality once more just before the half-hour mark to double his side’s advantage. Midfielder Khephren Thuram played a ball over the top for Moffi to run onto, and the former Lorient man was composed to run through on goal and score his 14th league goal of the season. The striker had now scored more goals against Monaco than he has against any other team in his career.
Moffi turned provider in the 43rd minute as he combined with Frenchman Thuram, passing to the midfielder to fire home his side’s third of the game, effectively sealing all three points for the visitors.
Moffi was substituted off in the 81st minute, with Algerian striker Bilal Brahimi introduced in his place.
