‘Moment I have been waiting for’ – Maduka Okoye reacts to Super Eagles opportunity
Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is set to take the field on Monday when Nigeria competes against Rwanda, following the compassionate leave granted to first-choice keeper Stanley Nwabali due to the recent passing of his father.
As the Super Eagles prepare for their final African Cup of Nations qualifiers, Okoye exudes confidence about the squad’s potential.
In a conversation with Victor Modo, he expressed optimism about the talents at the disposal of interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen, which he believes enhances the team’s chances of securing the trophy. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for us.
The AFCON is an important tournament for us and for the entire nation, so we are filled with enthusiasm,” Okoye shared. With Nwabali unavailable, Okoye is eager for his moment in the spotlight.
“This is my chance that I have eagerly awaited. I’ve been part of the camp for quite some time, and I’m thrilled to finally have the opportunity to step onto the pitch again.”
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has also reached out to Nwabali, expressing their condolences during this difficult time.
“I am grateful for this opportunity and can’t wait to don the jersey once more and play in front of Nigerian fans at home,” he continued.
The atmosphere in the Super Eagles camp is positive under Eguavoen’s leadership, and Okoye feels confident about their prospects. “We have the ability to replicate our past success and reach the final again. That’s our goal as we head into the AFCON. Winning is our primary focus, and I truly believe we have what it takes,” Okoye concluded.
The Super Eagles have already secured qualification for the 2025 AFCON set to take place in Morocco, following a 1-1 draw with Benin Republic on Thursday.
