Nigeria’s U17 girls, the Flamingos, won 3-1 against South Africa’s Bantwana on Saturday, putting them in a strong position for the final round of the qualification for this year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup.
Shakirat Moshood, who scored four goals at the 2022 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic, put Nigeria ahead in the 20th minute with a great finish. Harmony Chidi, who scored 13 goals in last year’s qualifying series, scored a penalty to make it 2-0.
Bantwana pulled one back after half-time when Malebana converted a penalty, but Harmony Chidi sealed the win for Nigeria with a third goal in the 68th minute.
The two teams will meet again in the return leg next Saturday at the Remo Stars’ Stadium in Ikenne-Remo. The winner will reach the final round of the qualification, where four teams will qualify to join hosts Morocco at the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, set for 17th October to 5th November.
