Morocco and Zambia Draw 2-2 in WAFCON 2025 Opener

The 2025 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) began tonight with an exciting 2-2 draw between Morocco and Zambia at the Rabat Olympic Stadium.

Zambia made a fast start, with Barbara Banda scoring in the very first minute of the game.

Morocco quickly responded. In the 12th minute, they scored from a penalty to make it 1-1. But Zambia took the lead again in the 27th minute when Racheal Kundananji found the net.

Both teams showed moments of strength and good teamwork. However, many fans criticised Morocco’s defence, especially for allowing a goal in the opening seconds—something coaches always try to avoid.

Moroccan captain Ghizlan Chebbak impressed with her performance and scored a late equaliser to make it 2-2 just before full-time.

Morocco is hosting this year’s tournament and came into it with high hopes. They were runners-up in the 2022 WAFCON after a narrow 2-1 loss to South Africa in the final. That strong performance helped them qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup and earned them respect across Africa.

Zambia also had a great tournament in 2022, finishing third after beating Nigeria in a tough bronze medal match. This is their fourth appearance in WAFCON, and they are determined to go far again this year.
