Mourinho Slams Referee After Benfica’s Late Draw With Rio Ave

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho has criticised referee Sergio Guelho after his team were held to a 1-1 draw by Rio Ave in the Portuguese league.

The former Chelsea boss, who only took charge of Benfica last week, saw his side score in the 86th minute through Heorhiy Sudakov, only to concede an equaliser in stoppage time.

Mourinho was frustrated that his side also had a goal disallowed earlier in the match. He told reporters that the referee “had no personality” and claimed the decision to rule out the goal was very harsh.

“We didn’t do enough in the first half, but the second half was good. We dominated and created chances. We finally got the goal, but we conceded when we should never have conceded. It is a very unfair result,” Mourinho said.

He added: “If this is the new football, when goals are cancelled because a toe touches another toe, then I don’t like it. But that’s the way it is.”

Rio Ave, who are yet to win this season, left the Estádio da Luz with a valuable point, while Benfica dropped two points in front of their home fans.

Mourinho’s team will now try to recover when they play Gil Vicente in the league this weekend, before facing his former club Chelsea in the Champions League next week.
