Musa nets winner on Karagumruk debut

Moffi, Awoniyi score for respective clubs

Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa scored the winning goal for his new side Fatih Karagumruk on his home debut for the club in their 3-2 win over Gaziantep FK in the opening round of matches in the 2021/22 Turkish Super Lig season.

Fatih Karagumruk went in front inside ten minutes of the match as former Chelsea defender Papy Djilobodji put the ball into his own net to give the home side the lead. Their lead lasted for just seven minutes before Angelo Sagal equalised for Gaziantep from the penalty spot in the 17th minute. Aleksandar Pesic scored two minutes later to put Fatih Karagumruk in front for the second time in the game before two bookings in 10 minutes at the end of the first half saw Sagal turn from hero to villain as he received his marching orders before the break. Ahmed Musa left three Gaziantep players on the floor before poking the ball past the goalkeeper as he rounded up the scoring for his side in the 90th minute to make it 3-1. Djilobodji scored in the right goalpost in the 94th minute to make it 3-2, but Fatih Karagumruk held on for all three points in the first match of the season.

In the German Bundesliga, Taiwo Awoniyi scored for Union Berlin in their 1-1 draw at home to Bayer Leverkusen in their first Bundesliga match of the season. Awoniyi opened the scoring as he turned home Max Kruse’s pass in the 7th minute to give his side a short-lived advantage which was cut by French winger Moussa Diaby just five minutes later to earn Bayer Leverkusen a point away from home on the opening day of the season. Awoniyi lasted 64 minutes before being substituted for Andreas Voglsammer.

In the French Ligue 1, Super Eagles striker Terem Moffi scored the lone goal for FC Lorient in their 1-0 win over AS Monaco on Matchday 2 of the French league. Moffi, who was named as Lorient’s player of the season in 2020/21 after scoring 14 goals, opened his account for the 2021/22 season against a side that is gradually becoming his stomping ground, as he scored against them last season. The 22-year-old slotted home a penalty in the 31st minute to give FC Lorient all three points at home to one of the league’s biggest sides.
