Naija Super 8: Sporting Lagos down Akwa United to reach final

NPFL new boys stun 2021 champions

Sporting Lagos came from behind to stun Akwa United 2-1 at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena and reach the final of the Naija Super 8 tournament.

Hours after unveiling former Remo Stars, Kwara United and Kano Pillars striker Junior Lokosa as their marquee addition, the Lagos-based club went toe-to-toe with 2021 NPFL champions Akwa United, managed by new head coach Fatai Osho, in the second semifinal.

Akwa United were quickest out of the blocks as they started the game on the front foot, leaving their opposition chasing shadows as they tried to keep up with the Promise Keepers in the battle of the wildcards.

The Uyo-based side went ahead in the 40th minute when mercurial midfielder Cyril Olisema stepped up to score a penalty after Sporting goalkeeper Christian Nwoke upended Sadiq Rilwan in the box.

Sporting Lagos drew level in the 55th minute through red-hot forward Saturday Okon, who finished smartly after he found himself free in the box following a quick free-kick routine.

The newly-promoted side completed the turnaround in the 69th minute when Jonathan Alukwu popped up to head home his first-ever goal for the club, sending the fans into raptures.

There was time for a 77th minute debut from Lokosa as Sporting Lagos held on for a memorable win, extending their unbeaten run in the competition to four games, all against NPFL sides. They will face Remo Stars in a Southwest Derby in the final on Sunday.
