Nathan Tella scores in Bayer Leverkusen’s 4-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt
Super Eagles of Nigeria forward Nathan Tella put in an outstanding performance, scoring in Bayer Leverkusen’s 4-1 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt.
The former Southampton player opened the scoring with a brilliant goal, receiving a precise through ball from Granit Xhaka before firing an unstoppable shot into the bottom left corner from the edge of the box.
This impressive display adds more pressure on coach Eric Chelle’s selection decisions ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers later this month. Tella last played for the Super Eagles in 2023 against Zimbabwe, where he was on the pitch for just 45 minutes.
With four goals in 32 appearances, including his stunning strike against Frankfurt, Tella is now a strong contender for selection.
Tella has expressed his desire to return to the Super Eagles squad but remains modest about his chances. “This is not for me to say. I’ve never been a player that says, ‘I should be called up.’ I have to work hard and earn my chance. If the new coach [Eric Chelle] thinks I’ve done enough, then I’d happily accept the call. But if not, I’ll work even harder,” he said.
The decision now lies with the new Super Eagles coach, who is expected to announce his squad in the coming week.
