NDDC Sports Festival: Teen star Etoro Bassey eyes global Tennis recognition in five years
Seventeen-year-old tennis talent Etoro-Obong Bassey from Akwa Ibom is confident that she will become a major force in the world of tennis within the next five years. Despite the rarity of global tennis stars emerging from this part of the world, Bassey remains undeterred in her pursuit of success.
Her calm and composed nature, coupled with a strong sense of confidence, makes it clear that she is serious about her ambitions. Every word she speaks is matched by her assured presence, reflecting her determination.
Smooth Passage to the Semis
Bassey recently made an impressive move to the semi-finals of the Women’s Singles at the Niger Delta Sports Festival in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, after defeating Favour Lucky from Imo State in straight sets, 5-3, 4-1. Speaking after the match per NDDC SPORTS FESTIVAL.COM, she acknowledged that the game had its challenges.
“The game was a little bit tough at first,” Bassey said. “I tried to understand the court because I’m not used to it. It was a bit rough, and the environment was new to me, so I took time to adjust. But once I got used to it, everything went well.”
Ready to Meet Expectations
Akwa Ibom has used the Niger Delta Sports Festival as a platform to nurture future champions, and Bassey is certainly one of the state’s brightest medal hopes. She is fully aware of the weight of expectations on her shoulders, but she is determined not to let it affect her performance.
“I’m confident I can deliver the gold medal for Akwa Ibom. I’ve prepared both physically and mentally for my matches, and I believe I can pull this off,” Bassey confidently stated.
Later, Bassey secured another spot in the semi-finals of the Women’s Doubles event, teaming up with Favour James to beat Edo State. This victory sets her up for a potential double gold as she is set to face Lorelay Holzendorff in the singles semi-finals.
From Humble Beginnings to a Bright Future
Tennis wasn’t always Etoro’s first love. She admits that it took time for her to develop an interest in the sport. However, once she discovered her passion, she never looked back.
“To be honest, I didn’t really like tennis at first. My brother and sister started playing, and I wasn’t interested. But over time, I began to watch and take interest in it. Now, I love it because it helps me express myself on the court,” Bassey explained.
Looking ahead, Bassey is certain about her future in the sport. When asked about her long-term goals, she confidently shared her vision.
“I see myself becoming a star, even bigger than Serena Williams, Madison Keys, and Aryna Sabalenka. I give myself five years. In the next five years, I’ll be on TV playing in the Grand Slams,” she said.
Bassey is also planning for her academic future. “I’m currently studying for my SATs, and I hope to get a scholarship to SURE University. Since it’s difficult to balance sports and university in Nigeria, I plan to pursue a scholarship abroad to play tennis and study at the same time,” she added.
With her drive, determination, and clear vision for the future, Etoro-Obong Bassey is undoubtedly a tennis star to watch in the years to come.
