New Super Eagles coach to be announced this week

Flying Eagles coach too.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is set to announce new head coaches for both the Super Eagles and the Flying Eagles by the end of this week.

Following Finidi George’s resignation in June, the NFF has been without a head coach for the Super Eagles with less than six weeks remaining before the AFCON qualifiers begin. An NFF official, who spoke anonymously, confirmed that the federation has carefully considered the credentials and financial feasibility of potential candidates before making a decision.

The official stated per BSN: “We have to take our time considering the pedigree of the coach and the ability to pay without owing him. Despite the time being against us, we must be very careful by not solving one problem to create another. We don’t want to repeat the mistake of the past where coaches were announced without ensuring a mechanism for salary payment. But now, we have settled for a good coach whom we can afford to pay without owing him, and the coach will be announced this week.”

Regarding the Flying Eagles, the official assured that the choice has been made after thorough scrutiny, and the new coach will also be announced this week.

The NFF did not disclose the names of the new coaches. Finidi George, who was appointed as the 41st manager of the Super Eagles in June 2024, resigned after leading the team to a 1-1 draw against South Africa and a 2-1 loss to Benin Republic, which put Nigeria’s World Cup qualification in jeopardy.
