Newly Engaged Aussies make United Cup debut Together
For Jason Kubler and Madison Inglis, the United Cup will mark their first tournament appearance together since getting engaged.
The Australian pair recently announced their engagement after a proposal on Rottnest Island and are now part of Team Australia just weeks later.
While the news had already been shared online, the United Cup is the first time they have spoken publicly about the moment. Both players spent the past month training in Perth as they prepared for the start of the 2026 season.
Speaking ahead of Australia’s opening tie, Kubler described the proposal and what it meant to begin the season together.
“That was crazy. It felt like we were on a first date again, so I’m very happy Maddy said yes,” Kubler said.
“But yeah, we were super pumped that we could both get into the United Cup as well. It’s not often that we can play the same tournaments, and when we can, we try. To start the year together, playing for Australia as well, supporting the team, it’s super special, and we’re really looking forward to the week.”
Inglis shared the same excitement, pointing to how the build-up to the event made the experience even more special.
“It’s very exciting, especially having that time in Perth, and then it was our first time to Rotto. It was such a special spot to do it, so yeah, it was really exciting,” she said.
“And yeah, it’s been nice to spend these couple of weeks together, especially to enjoy it, and it’s super exciting that we get to be part of Team Australia. So yeah, we’re really looking forward to it.”
Kubler and Inglis are listed as alternates for singles matches, with Alex de Minaur and Maya Joint leading Australia’s lineup. After the United Cup, both will travel to Melbourne to compete in Australian Open qualifying.
Australia begins their seson on January 3 against Norway, with Casper Ruud set to face de Minaur in the men’s singles.
