The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the National Sports Commission (NSC) will meet next week to decide who will lead the Super Eagles as they prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Currently, Augustine Eguavoen, a former international, is serving as caretaker coach. He helped the team qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after stepping in when the NFF could not appoint a permanent coach in time.
While Eguavoen’s efforts have been praised, there is a debate about whether he should continue as head coach. Some within the NFF prefer to hire a foreign coach but are concerned about the financial costs involved.
Sources suggest that the NSC supports Eguavoen remaining in charge. They believe appointing a new coach now would not be ideal due to the limited time before the Super Eagles’ next match against Rwanda.
The outcome of this meeting will shape the team’s preparation for the World Cup qualifiers and decide whether Eguavoen stays or a new coach is brought in.
