NFF Intensifies pursuit of Chelsea’s Tosin Adarabioyo for Super Eagles switch

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) is making a renewed effort to persuade Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo to switch his international allegiance from England to Nigeria, despite his previous rejections.

Adarabioyo, who has represented England at youth levels, has previously turned down approaches from the NFF. Earlier discussions between Adarabioyo and former Nigeria manager Jose Peseiro, which took place in London before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, did not lead to a change in his international commitment. However, the NFF remains persistent, seeing tosin Adarabioyo as a valuable addition to the Super Eagles.

The NFF’s determination mirrors their successful persuasion of Ademola Lookman, who initially declined Nigeria’s advances before eventually joining the national team.

Lookman’s impactful performances, especially during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he was crucial in the team’s journey to the finals, could serve as motivation for Adarabioyo to consider a similar switch.

Adarabioyo’s potential switch highlights ongoing debates about whether players should be allowed to change their international allegiance after initially representing one country.

This discussion is reminiscent of cases like Shola Ameobi’s switch to Nigeria after struggling for a consistent place in the England squad, a scenario that could influence Adarabioyo’s decision.

The NFF’s efforts to engage Adarabioyo are part of a broader strategy to strengthen the Super Eagles with players who can offer immediate impact.

Adarabioyo’s decision will be closely watched by both Nigerian and English football circles, with implications for national team dynamics and player development.
