NFF Issues Heartfelt Apology to President Tinubu and Nigerians After World Cup Setback

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has tendered an open and sincere apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government, and millions of Nigerians following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The apology comes after Sunday’s 4–3 penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the Africa Play-off Final in Rabat, which ended Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the World Cup after also missing the 2022 edition.
In a statement released by its Communications Department, the NFF described the defeat as a moment of “profound sadness”, noting that the World Cup disappointment has deeply affected a nation where football serves as a source of unity, pride, and hope.
According to the Federation, the players and technical crew fully understand the weight of expectations placed on the team and the emotional investment Nigerians make each time the Super Eagles play. The NFF revealed that the atmosphere in the dressing room after the match was filled with pain, with many players too heartbroken to speak.
The statement also acknowledged the immense support received throughout the qualification campaign from the Federal Government, the National Sports Commission, the National Assembly, various ministries and agencies, diplomatic missions, the media, and millions of loyal fans.
The NFF stressed that football in Nigeria goes beyond sport, describing it as a “national language” and a strong symbol of unity for over 200 million people.
Looking ahead, the Federation said it will now focus on preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which it sees as an opportunity for renewal and healing.
The NFF added that it will begin a thorough review of the technical, administrative, and structural issues that led to the World Cup failure, promising decisive action to reposition the national team.
“We make this solemn commitment to the people of Nigeria: We will rebuild trust. We will restore pride. We will reclaim our standing on the global stage,” the statement read.
The Federation concluded by assuring Nigerians that, just like the nation itself, the Super Eagles will rise again.
