NFF President Dismisses Rumors About Herve Renard and Super Eagles Job
The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has dismissed rumors that the federation is considering Herve Renard, the current coach of France’s women’s national team, for the Super Eagles’ vacant coaching position.
These reports, which have been circulating widely, suggested that the NFF had approached Renard to take over following the resignation of coach Finidi George in June.
The speculation was fueled by Renard’s impressive track record in African football. He is the only coach to have won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with two different countries, leading Zambia to victory in 2012 and repeating the feat with Ivory Coast in 2015.
This history of success made him a popular candidate in the media, with reports claiming he was recommended by the NFF technical committee.
Renard, who is set to lead France’s women’s team at the 2024 Olympic Games, announced that he would step down from his current role after the Olympics, making himself available for other opportunities.
Since then, several national teams, including Nigeria, Egypt, and the United States, have been rumored to be interested in securing his services.
However, NFF President Gusau has clarified the situation, telling The Punch, “I am not aware of that for now.” This statement effectively puts to rest the rumors linking Renard with the Super Eagles’ job.
Regarding reports that Renard was demanding a monthly salary of ₦253 million for the position, Gusau responded, saying, “Did you see it from any NFF communication channel? It is from some of those that are always trying to create confusion.”
As of now, the NFF has not made a decision on who will take over as the head coach of the Super Eagles, with the 2025 AFCON qualifiers just two months away.
The delay in appointing a new coach has led to increased speculation and concern among fans and analysts.
Despite the uncertainty, the NFF is expected to make a decision soon to ensure that the team is adequately prepared for the upcoming qualifiers.
The federation is likely considering several candidates with strong credentials to lead the Super Eagles to success.
