NFF President Ibrahim Gusau confident Super Eagles will qualify for 2025 AFCON and 2026 World Cup

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, is confident that the Super Eagles will qualify for both the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Super Eagles are on track to secure a spot at the 2025 AFCON, which will be hosted by Morocco. They began their qualifying campaign with a win and a draw against Benin Republic and Rwanda, and currently sit at the top of Group D with four points from two games under coach Augustine Eguavoen.

However, the team faces a tougher challenge in their bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. Nigeria is second from the bottom in their group, having earned only three points from four matches. Despite the slow start, Gusau remains optimistic about their chances.

“I have much confidence that we will qualify for the next World Cup in 2026,” Gusau said during the NFF’s annual general meeting. “I know we’ve had a bad start, three points in four matches, but we’ve made progress with the momentum now gathered by the Super Eagles.”

Gusau emphasised that the players understand the importance of the upcoming matches and promised that the NFF will continue to support the team in their efforts to qualify for both major tournaments.
