Nigeria and Togo Ready to Defend Titles at 2025 West Africa Table Tennis Championship

Nigeria and Togo are getting ready to defend their titles at the 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championships. The event will take place from 16 to 19 July at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall, inside Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
Nigeria, the most successful team in the region, will try to keep its title in the women’s team event, which they won again last year in Lomé. Togo, who beat Nigeria 3-2 in a close final last year, will hope to win the men’s team title again.
This year, the competition will be tough, with teams from Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Niger Republic, and Sierra Leone also taking part.
In the singles matches, Nigeria’s top player, Matthew Kuti, will try to keep his men’s singles title. Last year, he made history by beating Côte d’Ivoire’s Oba Oba Kizito 4-1 in the final. If he wins again, he will be the first male player to win two singles titles in a row.
In the women’s singles, a new winner will be crowned, as last year’s champion, Nigeria’s Hope Udoaka, will not be taking part.
This championship also acts as a qualifier for the 2025 African Championships, which will be held later this year in Rwanda. Nigeria, with the biggest team and home fans behind them, also hopes to win back the men’s team title.
More than 10 countries are joining this year – the highest number ever. In fact, Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Niger Republic are returning to the tournament after being away for several years.
“All eyes will be on Nigeria,” said Ferdinand Sonou, Vice President of ITTF Africa West Region and former head of the Benin Table Tennis Federation. “Nigeria has always hosted good events, and teams enjoy playing here. This is just the beginning of many international competitions in Lagos. I believe we will see both new talents and top stars shine.”
Sonou also praised ITTF Africa President Wahid Enitan Oshodi for his continued support. He said the growing number of teams shows that table tennis in West Africa is getting stronger.
The 2025 Championship promises exciting matches, strong rivalries, and a celebration of the best of West African table tennis.
