Nigeria coach names goal-scoring as area Super Eagles need to improve in AFCON knockout
Super Eagles of Nigeria head coach Jose Peseiro has named goalscoring as area his team must improve as they head to the knockout stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Peseiro stressed the importance of his team being more clinical in front of goal as they enter the knockout stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Super Eagles secured their place in the Round of 16 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday, January 23, 2024.
After sealing a place in the next round, Peseiro acknowledged that the team has struggled in front of goal during the competition, scoring only three goals in three matches, with two coming from open play (one own-goal) and one from a penalty.
As the competition now enters the crucial knockout phase, Peseiro emphasized the need for the players to convert their chances efficiently, recognizing that the slightest mistake could be fatal.
“It’s a new competition that’s starting for us. The most important part of a competition, the knockout matches. We will have to be more clinical in front of goal because the slightest mistake will be fatal for us,” Peseiro told reporters at the post-match interview.
The Super Eagles will face the second-place team from Group C in the Round of 16.
