Nigeria-Eligible Tyrique George Earns Praise After Scoring First Chelsea Goal

Tyrique George, who is eligible to play for Nigeria, has received praise after scoring his first senior goal for Chelsea in their 3-0 win against Legia Warszawa in the UEFA Conference League.

The 19-year-old forward, who joined Chelsea’s academy as a young boy, opened the scoring just after half-time at the Stadion Wojska Polskiego in Poland.

George reacted quickly in the 49th minute, firing home from close range after Legia goalkeeper Kacper Tobiasz spilled a shot from Chelsea captain Reece James. His well-taken goal gave the Blues the lead and set the tone for the rest of the game.

Noni Madueke later scored twice to seal the win for Chelsea, but it was George’s smart finish that caught the eye.

Former Leeds United striker Lucy Ward praised George during her commentary on TNT Sports, saying:

“I’m so pleased for Tyrique George. The changed tempo makes the difference. George is right on hand to drive home the rebound. Brilliant for the young man.”

George played for 75 minutes and impressed throughout. He completed 89% of his passes, had 46 touches, and looked sharp before being replaced by fellow youngster Shim Mheuka.

This goal marks another step forward for George, who made his senior debut for Chelsea earlier in the season in their 2-1 win over Servette.

Although George has played for England at youth level, he is still eligible to represent Nigeria at senior level — keeping alive the possibility of a future call-up to the Super Eagles.
