Nigeria could face 2002 group H opponents as World Cup draw pots confirmed
FIFA has confirmed the pots for next month’s World Cup draw after Peru defeated New Zealand to complete the 32-team line-up for the finals in Russia and Nigeria risks a repeat of 2002 world cup draw.
The 2002 world cup was Nigeria’s worst appearance at the most prestigious sports event after Nigeria finished the tournament scoring just one goal.
The Super Eagles were drawn in the same group as Argentina, England, and Sweden and after the pots confirmation, a repeat could be on the card.
While Sweden and England ended with 5 points each to qualify from the group, Nigeria finished bottom with 1 point.
Nigeria’s only point was from a goalless draw against England. The Festus Onigbinde led Eagles lost 1-0, 2-1 to Argentina and Sweden respectively in their first two games.
Julius Aghahowa scored Nigeria’s only goal of the tournament.
