Nigeria Flamingos qualify for 2024 FIFA U17 World Cup
Nigeria’s Flamingos have secured their spot in the FIFA U17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic after defeating Liberia 2-0 in Abuja and winning 6-1 on aggregate.
Chidi Harmony was the star of the match in Abuja, scoring both goals and bringing her total in the qualifiers to 13 goals. In the first leg in Monrovia, the Flamingos won 4-1 with goals from Harmony Chidi, Shakirat Moshood, Peace Effiong, and substitute Blessing Ifitezue. Liberia’s only goal came from a penalty late in the game.
This victory marks a successful period for Nigeria’s women’s teams: the Super Falcons have qualified for the Olympics, the Falconets for the World Cup, and now the Flamingos for the U17 World Cup.
The Flamingos have a strong history in the tournament, having participated in the inaugural edition in New Zealand in 2008 and subsequent editions in Trinidad and Tobago (2010), Azerbaijan (2012), Costa Rica (2014), Jordan (2016), and India (2022), where they finished in third-place.
