Nigeria men’s eye history as women seek 5th position at Africa Hockey Nations Cup

Nigeria men’s Hockey team are out to make history while the women’s team set to fight for 5th position as the 2022 Africa Hockey Nations Cup comes to an end today in Ghana.

The men’s team are playing for an historic place on the podium when they tackle the Kenyan national team today. Nigeria lost yesterday semifinal 7-0 to South Africa and Kenya lost their semis 5-1 to Egypt in the other semis.

Nigeria will finish third with a win against Kenya, and that will be the highest the men’s team have achieved in the competition’s history.

The men’s Africa Hockey Cup of Nations started in 1974 in Egypt and with Ghana winning the maiden edition while Nigeria finished 4th.

They finished 5th in 1983, 5th in 2000, 4th in 2005, 4th in 2009, 5th in 2017.

So, 3:15 pm today, a win for Nigeria against Kenya for a podium place will be an historic feat.

In the women’s category, the ladies who won their 7-8th classification game 4-0 against Uganda and will now play against Namibia today 10:45 am in the 5-6th classification.

This will be their lowest placement since the competition started in 2005. They finished 4th in 2005, 3rd in 2009 and 3rd in 2017.
