Nigeria qualify for 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World

Nigeria has qualified for the 2024 FIFA Women’s World Cup tournament following a 2-0 aggregate win over Burundi in the final qualifying round. SportsRation reports.

The Falconets of Nigeria completed the journey to the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup with a 1-0 win over Burundi at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja to sum a 2-0 aggregate score having triumphed in the first-leg by a lone goal scored by Janet Aikekoromowei .

In the second leg encounter, Coach Christopher Danjuma tutored Nigeria U-20 girls met a stubborn Burundi U-20 team but were rewarded for persistent pressure when Mary Mkpa set-up Esther Ajakaye to score the winner in the 79th minute.

Nigeria thus becomes the first African team to book a spot at the 2024 FIFA Women’s World Cup competition.

The Falconets will be attending a record-extending 11th edition of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria is on an exclusive list of four countries that have participated at all editions of the tournament, a list that includes, the United States of America, Brazil and Germany.

On their way to the 2024 World Cup, Nigeria was drawn bye in the first qualifying round. The Falconets enjoyed effortless victory in the second qualifying round after Mauritius pulled out from the qualification series.

Nigeria defeated Tanzania 3-2 on aggregate in the third qualifying round before taking out Burundi to pick one of four available spots for Africa.

The 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Colombia from August 31 to September 22, 2024.

The biennial tournament will be competed by 24 teams with Europe producing the highest number of participating teams [5].
