Nigeria to face Ghana in CHAN 2024 qualifying clash
West African rivals Ghana and Nigeria will meet in the qualifying rounds for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Both teams are in the same regional zone, making this an exciting contest as they fight for a spot in the tournament.
The CHAN competition, which features only players from local leagues across Africa, will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from January to February 2024.
Ghana and Nigeria have a long history of close matches. The last time they met in a CHAN qualifier, the game ended in a 2-2 draw, with Ghana winning on penalties.
For the 2024 CHAN, 19 teams will compete, one more than in the previous edition. The format for the tournament is yet to be announced. Qualifying matches will take place over two stages, with home-and-away fixtures.
In other regions, North African teams Morocco, Tunisia, and Libya have secured their places in the finals. Reigning champions Senegal will face either Sierra Leone or Liberia in the second round of qualifying.
The prize money for the 2024 CHAN has been increased by 60%, with the winners set to receive $2 million. Hosting the tournament is a major opportunity for Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda as they prepare to jointly host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
