Nigeria U18 girls crush Liberia 90-9 in FIBA U18 Afrobasket Qualifiers

The Nigeria U18 women’s basketball team delivered a stunning performance on Friday, August 2, 2024, crushing Liberia 90-9 in their FIBA U18 AfroBasketball qualification clash held in Abidjan.

The Young D’Tigress, as the Nigerian team is known, showcased their dominance with an overwhelming victory that underscores their readiness for the regional qualifier.

The match was part of the ongoing tournament, which runs from July 31 to August 4 in Abidjan. This regional qualifier features Nigeria, Liberia, and host Côte d’Ivoire, all vying for the sole ticket to the 2024 FIBA U18 Women’s AfroBasket scheduled to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, later in August.

The Young D’Tigress’ impressive win against Liberia sets a high bar as they prepare for their next game against Côte d’Ivoire. The outcome of this game will be crucial in determining which team secures the coveted spot in the final round of the tournament.

Côte d’Ivoire, which has previously earned two silver medals in five appearances at the U18s, is eager to make a return to the podium for the first time since 2014. They are counting on their home advantage to push them past Nigeria and Liberia.

Nigeria, having only appeared in the final rounds of the U18 championship twice—2008 and 2010—where they won a silver medal, is keen to make a significant return to the competition after an absence since 2010.

Liberia, making a comeback from a long suspension, will now have lessons to learn from the heavy loss to Nigeria as they return to the game.
