Nigeria U18 Hockey Teams Win Double Bronze at Youth Africa Cup

Nigeria’s U18 men’s and women’s hockey teams have both won bronze medals at the inaugural U18 Hockey5s Youth Africa Cup in Nairobi, Kenya.
The women’s team secured third place after defeating Ghana 4-3 in the bronze medal match, while the men’s team recorded a big 15-2 victory over Uganda to also finish with a bronze medal.
Nigeria’s women had an impressive run in the tournament, beating South Africa, Uganda and Ghana in the group stage before defeating Ghana again in the third-place match.
The men also enjoyed a strong campaign. They drew 7-7 with South Africa and defeated Ghana and Uganda before ending the tournament with another convincing win over Uganda.
The tournament, which was held from August 6 to 8, also served as Africa’s qualification event for the inaugural FIH Youth Hockey5s World Cup. The top two teams in both the men’s and women’s categories earned tickets to the World Cup.
Although Nigeria missed out on qualification, the double bronze-medal success gives the country’s young hockey players valuable international experience.
The National Sports Commission congratulated both teams, their coaches and officials for their performances in Nairobi.
