Nigeria Vs Algeria: Flamingos Set for Final World Cup Test Against Algeria

Nigeria’s U17 girls, the Flamingos, are just one step away from booking their place at the 2025 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco. Their final test? A two-legged clash against Algeria, starting this Saturday, 19 April, at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

While it’s officially a contest, many believe Nigeria are firm favourites to qualify — and rightly so. Their record speaks volumes.

Flamingos: A Dominant Force in Africa

The Flamingos are the most successful African side in U17 women’s football. They have qualified for seven of the eight U17 Women’s World Cups since 2008, making the quarterfinals five times.

Their best performance came in 2022 when they beat the USA on penalties in the quarterfinals and went on to win bronze — the first time an African team reached the podium at the tournament.

Nigeria have played 28 qualification matches in this category and lost just once — a 1-0 loss to Ghana in 2008. The rest includes 20 wins and seven draws. That’s dominance, plain and simple.

Under coach Bankole Olowookere, the girls have looked sharp and organised. After beating South Africa 5-1 on aggregate in the previous round, the team has remained in camp at the Remo Stars Sports Institute, fully focused on the challenge ahead.

Algeria: A Team Full of Spirit

Algeria’s U17 girls are still new to the scene. They only began competing in 2015 and have never qualified for a World Cup. This match will be their first ever meeting with Nigeria at this level.

Still, they’ve shown real fighting spirit. They narrowly edged Tunisia 1-0 on aggregate and overturned a 2-1 first-leg loss to beat Botswana 4-0 at home. They’re not among the elite yet, but they’ve earned their place in this final round.

However, facing Nigeria in Ikenne is an entirely different challenge — one Algeria will need to meet with courage, discipline, and hope.

What’s at Stake?

The winner over two legs will qualify for Morocco 2025. With the tournament expanding to 24 teams and five slots available for African nations (including hosts Morocco), Nigeria know this is their big chance to shine again on the world stage.

The return leg is scheduled for 25 April in Blida, Algeria.
