Nigerian basketball star Onyeka Okongwu ruled out indefinitely
Nigerian basketball star Onyeka Okongwu is set for an indefinite spell on the treatment table, latest updates on his recent injury reveals.
The Atlanta Hawks are facing an uncertain period without center Onyeka Okongwu due to a sprained toe, which has exacerbated concerns about their front-line depth following the All-Star break.
In a surpise announcement, Hawks coach Quin Snyder disclosed that Okongwu will be sidelined for an indefinite period, contrary to initial expectations of a shorter absence ranging from a week to 10 days.
The injury update from the Atlanta Hawks’ official Twitter account revealed that Okongwu has been placed in a walking boot due to a left big toe sprain/sesamoiditis. He is set to be re-evaluated in approximately two weeks, with his status to be updated accordingly.
This setback places added responsibility on backup center Bruno Fernando, who is now expected to shoulder increased minutes in Okongwu’s absence.
Okongwu’s injury comes as a significant blow to the team, given his recent progress and contributions on both ends of the floor. His absence will undoubtedly impact the Hawks’ position in the Eastern Conference standings as they continue to compete for a playoff spot.
Coach Snyder acknowledged Okongwu’s development and the value he brings to the team, stating, “Even before Clint went out you could just see his progress. He’s getting better in a lot of areas and some of the things he does and does well give us another dimension on both ends of the floor.”
