Nigerian Champions Edo Queens Triumph in CAF Women’s Champions League Opener

Edo Queens, representing Nigeria in the CAF Women’s Champions League, made a strong start to their tournament campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over CBE of Ethiopia.

Goals from Emem Essien, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Chukwuamaka Osigwe secured the win for the Nigerian champions, showcasing their intent in the competition.

As champions of the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL), Edo Queens are guaranteed a participation fee of $150,000 (over 250 million naira), with opportunities for additional earnings as they progress further in the tournament. T

he stakes are high, with the eventual winners set to receive $600,000, while the runners-up will take home $400,000, and the third-placed team will secure $350,000, along with other monetary incentives.

In the Group B matches, each of the eight participating clubs in the CAF Women’s Champions League Morocco 2024 will receive a minimum prize money amount, ensuring that all teams benefit from their involvement.

Looking ahead, Edo Queens will face another first-time participant, FC Masar of Egypt, on Wednesday. Their final Group B match will be against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa on November 16.

The tournament’s intensity was heightened further when FC Masar pulled off a surprise 1-0 upset against the two-time champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, underscoring the competitive nature of this year’s edition.
