Nigerian defender joins Stellenbosch FC in South Africa
South African side Stellenbosch FC have secured the services of experienced Nigerian defender Enyinnaya Kazie Godswill from Rivers United. The 25-year-old, who is versatile enough to play both as a right-back and a central defender, joins the Cape Winelands club as they look to bolster their defensive options.
Godswill, who previously played for Kwara United and Delta Force, made a name for himself on the continental stage with Rivers United, where he featured in 36 games across various competitions. Despite his solid performances, he was unable to help the club secure a continental trophy. However, he was instrumental in Rivers United’s triumph in the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season, contributing one goal and three assists.
The move to Stellenbosch comes as the club seeks to replace their former first-choice right-back, Deano Van Rooyen, who recently transferred to Orlando Pirates. Godswill is expected to compete with Kyle Jurgens, who has been filling in at right-back since Van Rooyen’s departure. Standing at 1.67 meters, Godswill will be looking to establish himself as a key player in Stellenbosch’s defensive lineup.
According to iDiski Times, the deal is pending finalization of a work permit, after which Godswill will travel to South Africa for his medicals and to complete the transfer. His arrival will mark another addition to the South African league from the NPFL, following in the footsteps of goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Godswill’s attacking prowess, with nine goals and 10 assists in nearly 200 career games, adds an additional dimension to his defensive capabilities. He was also part of the Nigerian home-based team that faced Mexico in a friendly in 2022, further highlighting his experience at both domestic and international levels.
Stellenbosch fans will be eager to see how Godswill adapts to the South African league and whether he can secure a regular starting spot as the season progresses.
