Nigerian National Teams Will Bring Joy in 2025 – NFF President Gusau
The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has assured Nigerians that the country’s national football teams will bring joy and pride to the nation in 2025 through proper preparation and strong performances.
Speaking on Monday while reflecting on 2024 and looking ahead to the new year, Gusau expressed optimism about the teams’ chances at upcoming tournaments, including the African Nations Championship (CHAN), Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), and Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
A New Era of Strong Contenders
Gusau stated that the days of Nigerian teams merely participating in tournaments are over. “Our aim now is to prepare our teams to compete for honours. For example, the early preparation of the Super Eagles B team helped them qualify for CHAN with an impressive win over Ghana’s Black Galaxies.
“With only a month to go before CHAN, the team will return to camp immediately to ensure they are fully ready for the competition,” he added.
Super Eagles and Falcons to Shine
The NFF president also highlighted plans for the senior national teams. He said efforts are underway to rebuild the Super Eagles squad that came close to winning the AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire. Gusau is confident that with proper preparation, the team can secure a FIFA World Cup ticket by winning all six remaining qualifiers and build momentum for a strong performance at AFCON in Morocco later in the year.
For the Super Falcons, who ended 2024 as Africa’s top-ranked team, Gusau promised more friendly matches to create a well-blended squad capable of reclaiming the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco.
Focus on Youth Teams
Gusau also expressed confidence in the youth teams, particularly the Flamingos, who he believes have the talent to win the U17 Women’s World Cup for the first time. “We’ve seen some incredible talents in the Flamingos who could even play for the Super Falcons. Our goal is to see them conquer the world in Morocco.”
The Falconets, Nigeria’s U20 women’s team, will also be supported as they prepare for qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup.
Commitment to Grassroots Development
Gusau emphasised the NFF’s dedication to grassroots football development, ensuring a steady pipeline of talented players for the national teams. He also mentioned plans to collaborate with the National Sports Commission and attract corporate support for football programmes and events.
“With a busy year ahead, we are determined to achieve our goals and make Nigerians proud,” Gusau concluded.
