Nigerian prodigy Akinkunmi Amoo completes switch to FC Copenhagen

Teenage forward becomes most expensive sale for Hammarby IF

Ex-Golden Eaglets star Akinkunmi Amoo has today completed a switch from Swedish side Hammarby IF to FC Copenhagen in the Danish SuperLigaen on a four-year contract for a fee of around €4.5 million.

Amoo is one of the most exciting youngsters out of Nigeria in recent years. The 19-year-old winger emerged during the 2019 FIFA U-17 World Cup and was snapped up by Hammarby IF shortly after. He won the Swedish Cup in his time in Stockholm.

Akinkunmi Amoo started his career with Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan, where he captained their U-15 team at the NPFL Promises Tournament in 2015. During the Christmas/New Year break, the dazzling winger returned to train with the club.

Akinkunmi Amoo enjoyed a productive spell in a Hammarby IF shirt, with 13 goals and six assists in 48 appearances for the club. The teenager is widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in Scandinavian football, as was confirmed by FC Copenhagen director Peter Christiansen after his transfer was completed.

“Amoo is one of the most interesting young players in Scandinavian football.”

“He is a player with fantastic acceleration and great abilities one on one, and he is also quite dangerous. The potential is huge, but there is also a lot of hard work ahead of him. If we succeed in releasing this, he can achieve a lot.

“We already have a large number of talented players in our squad, and we have only brought Amoo in because we think he is extraordinary and can give our offensive set-up even more options.

“We want to build a very strong attack with many opportunities, and Amoo gives us an incredible boost and some additional qualities to those we already have.”

The youngster was nearly part of the Super Eagles squad to Cameroon for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after the withdrawal of Odion Ighalo, but CAF’s rules blocked him from teaming up with the Super Eagles.

Akinkunmi Amoo expressed his gratitude to Hammarby for the chance they gave to him in a statement released today.

“I have had a fantastic time at Hammarby & I have great respect for the club & the fans there. They gave me the chance and believed in me and I will never forget that. Here I can develop & learn a lot together with the fantastic players that the club already has” Amoo said when he spoke to the FC Copenhagen website.
