Nigerian trio make Women’s Long Jump history to reach final at Paris 2024
For the first time in Olympic history, three Nigerian athletes will compete in the women’s long jump final, marking a historic milestone for the country.
Ese Brume, Ruth Usoro, and Prestina Ochonogor have all qualified for the final, showcasing Nigeria’s strength in the event.
Brume, the Nigerian long jump queen, once again demonstrated her prowess by leaping a remarkable 6.76 meters, surpassing the automatic qualifying distance of 6.75 meters. This achievement secures her place in the Olympic final for the third consecutive time.
“I’m thrilled to make it to the final for the third time,” Brume said. “I hope to replicate the same level of performance and possibly earn a medal this time.”
Brume has been a standout athlete for Nigeria, having been the country’s sole medallist in athletics at the Tokyo Olympics. With her impressive track record, there’s high hope for her to repeat or even surpass her past achievements in Paris.
Joining Brume in the final are Ruth Usoro and Prestina Ochonogor. Usoro, who faced disappointment in Tokyo after being among the 10 disqualified athletes, redeemed herself with a leap of 6.68 meters, marking her debut in an Olympic final.
“I’m filled with immense pride to qualify for my first Olympic final,” Usoro said. “I’m looking forward to giving my best performance.”
Ochonogor, who has shown consistent form throughout the season, also secured her spot with a jump of 6.65 meters, making her first appearance in a global final.
