Nigerians mock Ghana after 2-0 loss to Sudan in AFCON 2025 qualifier

Nigerians took to social media to troll Ghana’s Black Stars following their shocking 2-0 defeat to Sudan on Tuesday, October 15, in an AFCON 2025 qualifier. The loss puts Ghana on the verge of missing out on the prestigious tournament in Morocco next year.

Mockery on Social Media

Nigerians relished the unexpected outcome, with fans using humour and memes to react to the result. In one post that gained traction, Nsikakabasi Akpan mocked the Ghanaian team, saying:

“Sudan have just beaten ‘suffering’ Black Stars of Ghana 2-0 in a 2025 AFCON qualifier. Kudus to Sudan for the victory over Ghana’s suffering national team. Kudus to Sudan from .”

The playful dig referenced Mohammed Kudus, a star player in Ghana’s squad, sarcastically praising Sudan for capitalising on the Black Stars’ poor form.

Ghana’s AFCON Hopes Hanging by a Thread

The defeat leaves Ghana in a precarious position, sitting third in their group with only two points from four games. Ghana had gone into the match needing a win to keep their qualification hopes alive but fell apart despite a promising start.

Sudan capitalised on defensive lapses, with Mahmoud Mohamed breaking the deadlock in the 62nd minute. Just four minutes later, Mohammed Abdel-Rahman added the second goal, compounding Ghana’s misery.

The Black Stars had an earlier goal from Iñaki Williams ruled out for handball, further dampening their spirits.

Nigerians Troll Ghanaians with Banter

This defeat adds to a string of disappointments for the Ghanaian national team, and Nigerians, ever quick with football banter, were not going to miss the opportunity to poke fun at their West African rivals.

One Twitter user posted:
“After following the Super Eagles to Libya, the Black Stars might as well follow them home, because no Morocco for them.”

Another fan commented:
“Ghana fans stoned their players after losing to Angola; I wonder what they’ll throw after losing to Sudan. “

This isn’t the first time Nigerians have mocked Ghana for football misfortunes. The banter between the two nations has been ongoing, particularly after Ghana denied Nigeria a spot at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Black Stars Face a Tough Road Ahead

Ghana’s path to AFCON qualification is now extremely narrow. They must win their remaining games in November against Niger and Angola and hope that Sudan drops points.

With morale low and pressure mounting, Ghana will need to regroup quickly to keep their AFCON dreams alive, or they risk missing out on the tournament they’ve won four times in the past.

Sudan’s Victory Puts Pressure on Ghana

Sudan’s victory not only boosts their own qualification hopes but also casts doubt over Ghana’s ability to stay competitive in Africa’s top football competition.

As things stand, the Black Stars are staring at the possibility of sitting out AFCON 2025 — a bitter pill to swallow for one of Africa’s football giants.
