Nigerians voice opinions on Austin Eguavoen’s future as Super Eagles head coach

Following the resignation of Finidi George in June as the Super Eagles coach, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) turned to Austin Eguavoen for a third stint as interim head coach.

This appointment came amid ongoing discussions about bringing in a foreign coach, which saw the NFF fail to secure the services of Bruno Labbadia last month.

Eguavoen’s latest tenure began with mixed results in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers—a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin, followed by a goalless draw against Rwanda. Despite this decent start, uncertainty lingers about his future in the role.

Mixed Reactions from Nigerian Fans

Nigerian football fans took to social media to share their views on whether Eguavoen should continue as head coach or if a more permanent solution is needed. Some fans praised his efforts, expressing confidence in his leadership.

While some fans called for Eguavoen’s removal, others urged patience, emphasizing that he needed time to build a cohesive team.

A balanced perspective emerged from others who believe in Eguavoen’s potential but stressed the need for further tactical evolution and long-term planning.

Eguavoen’s Previous Tenures

This marks Eguavoen’s third time in charge of the Super Eagles. His first stint came in 2005, leading the national team to a bronze medal finish at the 2006 AFCON. His second reign was in 2021 when he replaced Gernot Rohr ahead of the AFCON tournament, guiding Nigeria to the round of sixteen before being eliminated by Tunisia. After that, he returned to his role as technical director.

What’s Next for Eguavoen?

As the NFF deliberates on its next move, Nigerians remain divided on whether Eguavoen should continue as head coach or make way for a new leader. While some appreciate his steady hand, others believe a more tactical, long-term approach is needed for the Super Eagles to excel in future competitions.
