Nigeria’s Chimezie Metu Joins Barcelona

FC Barcelona have bolstered its roster with the addition of Chimezie Metu, marking the club’s second Nigerian player alongside James Nnaji.

The 27-year-old American of Nigerian descent has signed a one-season contract, extending through June 30, 2025.

Metu’s arrival at the Palau Blaugrana follows a productive stint with the Detroit Pistons, where he averaged 10.5 points, 6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game during the final stretch of the 2023–2024 NBA season.

The Nigerian-born Los Angeles native is making his debut in European basketball with this move.

European Debut for Metu

Before his European venture, Metu made his mark in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs, who drafted him in the 2018 NBA Draft.

He also had notable stints with the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns. His latest contract with the Pistons, which is set to conclude at the end of this season, paved the way for his transition to FC Barcelona.

Skills and Impact

Standing at 2.08 meters, Metu is known for his athleticism, mobility, and strength in the paint, along with his ability to contribute offensively from beyond the arc. He primarily plays as a winger pivot but can also adapt to other roles as needed.

National and International Experience

Chimezie Metu has represented Nigeria on the international stage, including his participation with the D’Tigers at the Tokyo Olympics. His move to Barcelona comes after a dynamic career in the NBA, highlighting his adaptability and skill set.

Barcelona’s Growing Nigerian Influence

With Metu joining James Nnaji, Barcelona’s roster now features two Nigerian players, further strengthening the club’s international presence.

The addition of Metu is expected to enhance Barcelona’s competitive edge in European basketball competitions.
