Nigeria’s Flying Eagles eliminated from African Games after defeat to Senegal
The Flying Eagles of Nigeria have suffered a disappointing exit from the 2024 African Games following a 3-2 defeat to Senegal in Ghana.
Ladan Bosso’s side, buoyed by a hard-fought victory against South Sudan where Sadiq Isiaka’s penalty secured the win, faced another stern test against the Senegalese team.
Despite their seven-time U-20 Africa Cup of Nations champions status, the Flying Eagles required just a draw to advance to the next round. However, Senegal thwarted their ambitions with a determined performance.
Charles Agada, who had showcased his talent for Nduka Ugbade’s Golden Eagles at the U-17 AFCON tournament, opened the scoring in the second minute for the Flying Eagles. However, Senegal swiftly responded, with Idrissa Gueye leveling the score before firing his team ahead before halftime.
Although Nigeria fought back early in the second half with Chibueze Izuogu’s equalizer, Senegal regained the lead through a goal in the 65th minute to secure victory and dump Ladan Bosso’s charges out of the games.
Despite Nigeria’s late efforts and even being reduced to 10 men, Senegal maintained their advantage until the final whistle, dashing the Flying Eagles’ hopes of progressing further in the competition.
