Nigeria’s growing presence at the Ballon d’Or: A new era of recognition
Nigeria’s representation at the Ballon d’Or continues to grow, with Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman becoming the latest star to earn recognition on the global stage. His 14th-place finish in the 2024 edition signals not only his individual brilliance but also the rise of Nigerian football talent on the international scene.
The Ballon d’Or, awarded by France Football, remains football’s most prestigious individual honour, with legends such as Zinedine Zidane and Lionel Messi among its winners. The award has been presented annually since 1956, celebrating the best players in world football.
A Rich Legacy of Nigerian Nominations
Since 1995, only nine Nigerian players have been nominated for the Ballon d’Or, a testament to the country’s rich footballing tradition. That year, Finidi George, Daniel Amokachi, and Austin Jay-Jay Okocha became the first Nigerians to receive nominations, following stellar performances at the 1994 World Cup and with their respective clubs.
They paved the way for Nwankwo Kanu (1996, 1999), Victor Ikpeba (1997), Sunday Oliseh (1998), and most recently, Asisat Oshoala (2022, 2023), Victor Osimhen (2023), and Ademola Lookman (2024). Each of these players has contributed to cementing Nigeria’s position as a hotbed of football talent.
Osimhen, Lookman, and Boniface Leading the Charge
Victor Osimhen’s rise to stardom has brought Nigerian football under the global spotlight. His 8th-place finish at the 2023 Ballon d’Or followed a phenomenal season in which he led Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years, clinching the league’s Golden Boot.
This year, Ademola Lookman earned a 14th-place finish after a stellar campaign with Atalanta, capped by a sensational hat-trick in the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen. Many felt Lookman deserved a higher ranking, given his remarkable form throughout the season.
Speaking on Nigeria’s back-to-back Ballon d’Or nominations, Uduak scar expressed optimism: “This is a sign of good form by our players, and I believe it will continue. With talents like Osimhen, Victor Boniface, and Lookman excelling at their clubs, Nigeria will remain a strong force.”
Osimhen, now at Galatasaray, has maintained his top form, while Boniface is on fire for Bayer Leverkusen, scoring eight goals in his first 11 matches this season. These performances make a strong case for further nominations in future Ballon d’Or editions.
A Podium Finish Within Reach?
As Nigerian players continue to excel on the international stage, the possibility of a podium finish at the Ballon d’Or grows ever closer. Uduak Oscar believes that with the current crop of players, this milestone may not be far off: “It’s only a matter of time before one of our players makes it to the Ballon d’Or podium.”
