Nigeria’s Moses Simon close to history with Nantes

Nigeria Super Eagles experienced winger Moses Simon is close to making history with his Frecnh Ligue One side FC Nantes.

According to MediaSportif, Simon is about to become the club’s best penalty taker in over 30 years.

Since 2020, Simon has scored six consecutive penalties in Ligue 1, a record no other Nantes player has matched since Nicolas Ouédec’s streak from 1991 to 1996.

Simon’s perfect penalty record is better than recent Nantes players like Imran Louza and Ludovic Blas, who both missed penalties after scoring five and six in a row, respectively.

If Simon scores one more penalty without missing, he will break the records of Filip Djordjevic and Ludovic Blas to become Nantes’ most reliable penalty taker in the 21st century.

Simon kept his perfect record with a key penalty in Nantes’ 3-1 win over Lens last weekend. This was his third successful penalty of the season, helping Nantes move up to 14th in Ligue 1 and stay out of the relegation zone.

The 28-year-old’s performance earned him a spot in the WhoScored.com Ligue 1 Team of the Week, as Nantes fight to avoid relegation.

Simon has been one of Nantes’ best players this season, scoring six goals and providing seven assists in 21 league games.

His perfect penalty record is part of what makes him one of the most reliable penalty takers in Ligue 1. Only Gaëtan Laborde from OGC Nice (4/4) and Abdoulaye Touré from Le Havre (3/3) have matched Simon’s 100% penalty rate this season.

Simon’s latest performance came after passing a late fitness test for an injury. He played without any problems, scoring a goal and getting an assist. His penalty gave Nantes a two-goal lead, and Mostafa Mohamed sealed the win with a late goal.

With 24 points from 23 matches, Nantes is counting on Simon to help keep them in the top flight. If his penalty streak continues, he could become one of the club’s greatest-ever penalty takers.
