Nigeria’s rich WAFCON history will not help us beat Cameroon or win La Decima – Waldrum

Coach Randy Waldrum is not counting on Nigeria’s rich Women’s Africa Cup of Nations history or the fantastic record against Cameroon on Thursday.

Nigeria will play Cameroon today for a place in the semifinal of WAFCON and a ticket to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Going by history and good record against the Thursday opponents, Nigeria should win this game but coach Waldrum is adamant that past results will not help La Decima chasing Super Falcons.

“In one of the press conferences earlier I did say we always have to respect the history and all the matches when country play against countries when African nations play against other African nations.

“Like we have to respect that history, but one thing I have always believed in too is that history is just what that word implies things that came before now.

“And really the only thing that really matters, it doesn’t matter if we’ve had more wins or they have more wins or what happened in the last qualification stage.

“It is really all about this team right now this moment and this group of players at this moment and that’s what we’ve said since a year and 6 months ago when I came on board.

“The history of Nigeria winning this tournament is not gonna help us win this tournament we have to win it based on our own merit with the players we have and with the work we put in.

The quarterfinal game between Nigeria and Cameroon will be played today at Stade Mohammed V, Casablanca at 6 pm Nigerian time.

Nigeria have won the title 9 times out of the past 11 tournaments, a win this year makes it the 10th.
