Nneka Ogwumike announces Retirement after 15 Seasons in the WNBA

Nneka Ogwumike is walking away from the WNBA.

The 11-time All-Star announced Wednesday that she will retire at the end of the 2026 season, bringing an extraordinary 15-year career to a close.

The 2012 No. 1 overall pick made the announcement in an exclusive interview with Taylor Rooks for Boardroom Talks, saying she has reached a point where she feels ready to move on.

“I’ve learned there’s power in knowing when to walk away.”

For Ogwumike, walking away does not mean she has stopped loving basketball. Instead, she says she has reached a place of gratitude and fulfilment after everything the game has given her.

“I find myself grateful, fulfilled, and at peace with everything this game has given me and everything I’ve poured into it.”

And what a career it has been.

Ogwumike won WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2012, became league MVP and a champion in 2016, earned 11 All-Star selections, eight All-WNBA selections and seven All-Defensive Team selections.

She also spent 13 of her 15 seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks, becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in scoring, field goals made, steals and double-doubles.

Since 2016, she has served as president of the Women’s National Basketball Players Association, becoming one of the most important voices for WNBA players during a period of enormous change in women’s basketball.

During her time as union president, WNBA players secured major improvements in salaries, benefits, protections and resources.

Ogwumike knows her career has changed her in ways that go beyond basketball.

“I’ve been challenged as a competitor, shaped as a leader, and exposed to unforgettable people and experiences.”

She leaves the court knowing she has also helped shape the league she is leaving behind.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert summed up Ogwumike’s influence simply:

“Nneka will retire at the end of this season leaving the WNBA much better than she found it.”

There is still a season left to play, though, before Ogwumike officially walks away .
