No surprises as William Troost-Ekong reveals why he moved to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Kholood

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has shed light on his decision to join Saudi Pro League side Al-Kholood, leaving Greek Super League champions PAOK just last month.

Despite being in top form after his performances at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the 31-year-old center-back made a move to the Middle East, joining high-profile stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema in Saudi Arabia.

Troost-Ekong’s transfer raised eyebrows, but the experienced defender has now revealed the factors behind his decision. Speaking on the Counter Attack podcast, he explained that the financial package offered by Al-Kholood was simply too tempting to resist, especially at this stage of his career.

“I got an offer I couldn’t turn down. I am 31, and now I have to think about the big picture,” Troost-Ekong said, acknowledging the need to consider his long-term future. “The opportunity to guarantee my future and provide for my family was something I had to think about seriously.”

While many see Saudi Arabia as a league for players nearing the end of their careers, Troost-Ekong believes that the Saudi Pro League is highly competitive. The Nigerian international highlighted the presence of world-class players like Benzema, N’Golo Kante, and Fabinho, who have all moved to Saudi Arabia recently.

“I think the Saudi Premier League is competitive. You see the names that are playing there—players at world-class level,” he added.

Since his arrival at Al-Kholood, Troost-Ekong has made two appearances, both resulting in losses. However, the former Watford and Udinese defender remains optimistic about his future in the Saudi Pro League and will be looking to help turn his team’s fortunes around when they face Al Orubah at home this weekend.
